The dynamic is these people are thrown together and they don't necessarily like each other, but they are going to get along because they are the last people. Her and Carol really get along and have a great friendship. I'm not going to give anything away, other than she's a very forthright person. Your character, Melissa, is the third person left on earth that we meet in the series. But who doesn't want to go to work and cry laughing every day? It's the best medicine for everything. We improv a lot, so you don't know what they are going to say or do. It's just hard to keep a straight face for my cover. Is it as fun to be on set with The Last Man on Earth as it is to watch it? As much as Mad Men was beautiful and Betty was the best character I could have ever asked for in my career, to go to work and have it be a little lighter is just easier on your psyche. I'm all about a beautifully written script and a beautifully written character and telling that story. It's just been easier to go to work and shed the character at the end of the day. I was ready to do something different and if I was going to go directly into another TV show, it couldn't have been any other show besides Last Man on Earth-just because of the caliber of people involved, the writing, and I knew I was going to go to work It's comedy, it's still great writing, but in a whole different genre. What drew you to the show? What attracted me to the role was that it was so different, and it's just lighter. From 1960s New York to postapocalyptic Tuscon-The Last Man on Earth is about as different from Mad Men as you can get. It's safe to say we've never seen her in anything like this before, so I caught up with Jones by phone to chat all about her brand-new job.
